Class and Level information

Op deze pagina vinden jullie uitgebreide informatie over de lessen die wij aanbieden.

On this page you will find lots of information about the classes that we offer.

How does the registration work?
You can register online by yourself (as a follower or a leader) or as a couple. Sometimes there is a waitinglist for single followers, because we want to keep de balance between leaders and followers optimal.

No fixed dance partners
We rotate dance partners during class. So you will not dance with the same person all the time, but with several classmates. That’s what makes Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues and Collegiate Shag ‘social dances’!

Interested in trying Lindy Hop, with no strings attached? Come and join us at Hopspot, a weekly dance night at Winkel van Sinkel.

    • Every Wednesday from 19.40 to 23.00
    • Drop-in class for beginners (19.40 to 20.30)

    • Followed by a social dance with DJs and/or a live band
      • Costs: 3 EUR  (on band nights sometimes a bit more)

Can’t make it on Wednesdays? The first class of a new term can be used as a try out for couples, if the class is not full yet. Please contact first if you want to do this.

Level descriptions

As a general guideline we use the number of years that you have been dancing (in classes and on the social dancefloor) to determine someone’s level.

Lindy 1 – Beginners (less than 1 year)
1A You have never followed Lindy Hop classes before. But you have caught the virus somewhere and you are interested to see what it is all about!
1B You have followed at least 1 Lindy Hop course and you are beginning to notice that the connection to the music and your partner is feeling more natural.
1C You have probably followed 2 Lindy Hop courses by now and you are slowly expanding your repertoire of moves and techniques.

Lindy 2 – Intermediate (1 year or more)
You are confident with basic swingouts, tuckturns, charleston variations and more. You are confident to go social dancing and have fun on the dancefloor!
To make sure you will be challenged every single block, we will make sure that the material taught in level 2 changes from block to block. So there is no fixed curriculum. On top of that, to try to fulfill everyone’s needs, we offer three different types of level 2 classes, where the teachers focus on different aspects of Lindy Hop.

Lindy 3 – Advanced (2 years or more)
You are confident with any tempo on the social dancefloor and are not surprised by breaks in the music anymore and know what to do with them. You have attended several international workshops already and want to work on the more subtle details of your dancing, like styling and musicality.

Lindy 4
Lindy fanatics dancing regularly on socials,  attending many  (inter)national weekends and who are up for a challenge can join this level. You are a teacher, or have been taking classes at level 3 but have now outgrown that level. New to Swing in Utrecht? Let us know in your registration. If needed we will invite you for an audition.

Blues 1
This class is open for all levels. It doesn’t matter if you have any blues (or other dance) experience, everyone is welcome! Also perfect for the people who have danced blues before and want to brush up their basics.

Blues 2
This class is open for those who at least have done a block of blues dancing before or did several workshops.

Collegiate Shag
This class is open for all levels. It doesn’t matter if you have any shag (or other dance) experience, everyone is welcome! Also perfect for the people who have danced shag before and want to brush up their basics.

General classflow

Level 1
All dancers start at level 1A. All students continue to level 2 after they did level 1B and 1C, unless the teachers advise to redo 1C, for instance if the student was absent at many classes or the technical bases needs more attention to enjoy the level 2 class.

Level 2
Each student stays in level 2 for a full year (3 blocks of classes). During this year Swing in Utrecht provides classes with different teacher couples to continue and deepen the material from the first year. Each teacher couple has its own strengths and ways of dancing which will help you improve and challenge your dancing.

Level 3
After one year of dancing in level 2 students can continue to level 3, unless the teachers give an advise to continue in level 2. There can be a lot of difference between students who just like to dance once a week, and students who go out social dancing at every opportunity and regularly follow workshops. Both are great ways to enjoy dancing and lead to different learning curves. So while some might proceed to level 3 more quickly, others stay in level 2 for a few years, which is fine too!

New to SiU
When you’re new to Swing in Utrecht, there might be exceptions if:

  • you followed at least 10 Drop-in classes
  • have a lot of dance experience and a teacher from Swing in Utrecht assessed your dancing skills

Then, there are several options:

  1. You start in 1A and 1B at the same time.
    • Note: You cannot join 1B if you did not get into 1A
  1.   You start in 1B after following private classes with a teacher of Swing in Utrecht
  2.   You start in 1B directly

The best option for you will be decided by a teacher of Swing in Utrecht.

Further notes for all options mentioned above:

    • Students who followed 1A in the previous block have priority for 1B
    • New students in 1B might not be able to join if the ratio leaders/follows is too much off balance. We strongly recommend you sign up with a partner!
    • When subscribing for class: mention your option and the teacher and have been in contact with

Level 3
Exceptions are made for very talented dancers to continue to level 3 during their first year in level 2.

Write a note to if you wish to go through your personal options with us and the teachers of Swing in Utrecht.
